Come & See

Come and See is about connecting with God through engaging with Scripture. This book was an enjoyable read for me. Let me break down my thoughts on why I enjoyed it into three reasons – it is engaging, it is well-rounded, and it is understandable.

First, I found this book to be very engaging. It kept my attention by moving at a good pace through the three ways of connecting with God through Scripture: informational, theological, and transformational. We join in on an interesting journey, a road trip that includes three friends who connect with the Bible in the three ways, each having a strength we can learn from. The book is well-organized and you, as the reader, always know where you are at and where you are going.

Second, Come and See is well-rounded. It covers a wide variety of topics related to engaging with the Bible. Topics include,

  • Paying attention to context and genre.
  • Avoiding common interpretive mistakes when studying Scripture.
  • How to read a passage while keeping the canonical or redemptive story in mind.
  • Taking into account the history of theology and interpretation as you engage with Scripture.
  • Using the wisdom of past church leaders through the creeds.
  • Opening up our hearts to God as he desires to apply Scripture to our day-to-day lives.
  • Having a posture of openness to allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us as we encounter truth.

Many books about Scripture only cover a few of these topics. This book covers them all.

Third, I found this book to be very understandable. It is written in such a way that just about everyone can benefit from it. You can give it to a new Christian to get started on the journey of studying and knowing Scripture. It is not technical and all the terms are defined in a helpful, clear way. You can use this book for a class at church or in your small group as an excellent introduction to Scripture and as a springboard for deeper study. Pennington highlights tried and true resources throughout the book if you want to study more and he has guided activities to engage with his topics by using selected Bible passages. You can do these activities on your own and share your insights with friends or do these activities together with a small group.

Two thumbs up!
