I am in the midst of writing a study on 1 Timothy. When I do a book study, I always like to do a week of introduction. This is intended to be a survey of the background and themes of the book. Having this information in mind when the specific texts are studied can be extremely beneficial. Doing an introduction like this will help gain a birds eye view of the entire book before diving into individual passages. Knowing information about the author, recipients, date, and historical situation will greatly help in understanding the meaning of individual passages one might study within the book.
